Comparison Of Droid Razr Maxx And Iphone 4s

The smartphone is designed for customers who spend days and nights multi-tasking

and is something of a marathon runner, with enough endurance to allow the user to talk for 21 hours on a single charge.

The Droid Razr Maxx, which is being released for $300 with a two-year Verizon contract in the near future, is expected to face immense pressure from Apple's iPhone 4S.

Let's see how the Droid Razr Maxx fares against the iPhone 4S:

Dimensions:

Here is the Droid Razr Maxxs first change from the Droid Razr: its thicker. The original Droid Razr drew headlines and created buzz as the worlds thinnest smartphone. Its battery, however, created problems for many people (standard fare for LTE Android phones).

The Razr Maxx comes with a better battery, but, in the process, it takes away the Razrs claim to fame. The Maxx is barely thinner than the iPhone 4S, which is rocking an 18-month-old design.

Weight:

That bigger battery isnt helping the Razr Maxxs weight either. Its heavier than the iPhone 4S by 5g. Keeping some perspective, though, these are still two relatively light smartphones.

Display:

The Razr Maxx has a 4.3-inch qHD 960 x 540 Super AMOLED Advanced display with Dupont KEVLAR fiber, a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass and water-repellent nanoparticles. On the other hand, the iPhone 4S has a 3.5-inch LED-backlit IPS TFT Retina multi-touch display with a resolution of 960 x 640 pixels at 326 ppi density. The iPhone 4S has fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating on front and back.

Storage:

The Droid Razr Maxx is equipped with an internal memory of 16 GB. If thats too small for you, the device has a microSD slot that allows you to pack it with an additional 32 GB. That means youll have up to 48 gigs of storage space on this device but is by no means impressive next to the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 4S has memory for everyones needs. With models packing 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB, youve got more than enough room to store music, videos, pictures, and other files that you might need. If you need more space than that, though, youre out of luck. The iPhone 4S doesnt have any microSD slots for extra storage.

Camera:

Both smartphones sport a rear-facing 8 megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture capability. The Razr Maxx has a 1.3 megapixel camera in the front, while the iPhone 4S has a VGA camera for video calling.

Processor and Operating System:

Its quite disappointing that the Droid Razr Maxx comes out of the box with only Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, but with promise of Ice Cream Sandwich on the horizon, the Droid Razr Maxxs specs wont go to waste. Its got a Texas Instruments OMAP 1.2 GHz dual-core processor with 1 GB RAM. It also has a PowerVR SGX540 GPU.

The iPhone 4S runs on its own iOS 5, with a RAM of 512 MB. Its RAM may not be impressive by todays smartphone standards but the devices graphics are still something to behold. The iPhone 4S has a dual-core 1 GHz Cortex A9 CPU and a PowerVR SGX534MP2 GPU.

RAM:

The Razr Maxx also has more RAM, 1GB next to the iPhones 512MB. The faster processor and additional RAM dont necessarily make the Razr Maxx a faster phone though. Since Apple controls its own hardware and software, it can strike (what it believes is) the right balance for optimal performance.

With that said, specs dont lie. The Razr Maxx has a turbo-charged processor and plenty of RAM.

Battery:

The Droid Razr Maxx has a whopping 3,300 mAh battery that is expected to give up to 21.5 hours of talk time and 380 hours standby time. The Apple smartphone has a Li-Po 1420 mAh battery, with 8 hours of talk time on 3G networks, up to 14 hours on 2G networks (GSM) and a standby time of 200 hours.

Wireless Data:

If maximum data speeds are what youre looking for, then the Razr Maxx is the clear winner. It rides on Verizons speedy LTE network, while the iPhone 4S is (mostly) still living in the land of 3G.

The only (sort of) exception is the AT&T version of the 4S, which can hit theoretical speeds of 14.4Mbps. Though this is the same network that was advertised as 4G on the Motorola Atrix (and a few other phones), your actual speeds are more likely to rival Sprints WiMax (at best) than Verizons LTE.

Connectivity:

The Droid Razr Maxx is touted as 4G LTE device, running on Verizon's network. The iPhone 4S has HSDPA 14.4 Mbps and HSUPA 5.8 Mbps.

WLAN/Bluetooth/USB: The Droid Razr Maxx has 3.5mm jack+ EMU and supports USB 2.0 HS, Corporate Sync, DLNA, FOTA, Stereo Bluetooth Class 2, Version 4.0 LE+EDR. iPhone 4S has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, advanced Bluetooth 4.0 version with A2DP and USB 2.0 version.

Pricing:

The Razr Maxx is expected to be available at Verizon for $299.99 on a two-year contract. The iPhone 4S is available on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint networks at $199.99, $299.99 and $399.99 for the 16GB, the 32GB and the 64GB, respectively.
