Composite Decks: Getting A Clean Surface

One of the biggest selling points of composite decks is their low maintenance

. If you take moderate care of your investment, you won't have to worry about wood rot, mold growth, and the other disadvantages that come with a patio made from pure wood. That said, it will still need a good, vigorous cleaning from time to time. The material your patio is made from isn't going to keep birds from relieving themselves on it or you from spilling burger grease on it during those family cookouts. While the best approach to this is to simply do a light cleaning on a regular basis, you may need to go deeper once a year or so. Here's how to get your patio back to its pristine condition.

Remove Furniture

You can do light cleaning with your patio furniture in place, but you'll want to take everything off the surface for more vigorous cleaning episodes. It's just easier to maneuver around without having to dodge a chair here and a chaise lounge there. Sweep the platform down and get rid of all the obvious debris like leaves. If you have a leaf blower, this might be a good time to bring it out of the garage.

Use the Hose

Some homeowners are hesitant to use a hose and a spray nozzle on their wooden patios. While rain is unavoidable, they would rather avoid the trouble that comes with mold for as long as they can. With composite decks, you should have no such concerns. Get out the hose and give the platform a good spraying. This will get rid of the dust and dirt that tends to accumulate over time. Make sure you hit the stairs, railings, and all the surfaces you might not immediately think of while doing the job. If there are any areas where the hose isn't getting rid of something, you can use a shop broom to give it a hand.

Power Washing

Sometimes a hose and a broom just isn't going to cut it. If it has been a long time since your last deep cleaning, you might want to rent or purchase a power washer. It doesn't matter what kind of dirt is caked onto your patio; it isn't going to withstand the high pressure of a good power washer. If you use a cleaning product in conjunction with the washer, make sure it is approved for use on composite decks. Read the instructions carefully on both the machinery and the cleaning solution before use.
