There are two types of springs that are used for majority of purposes. These springs are compression springsandextension springs. These two kind of springs look similar, with hooks and attachments on the sides; however, they serve for opposite functions. Extension springs hold components together; compressions springs keep components apart. Both of these springs require coil design for elasticity and strength; however, they work under two different principles of elastic and potential energy. Both of the springs have loops and hooks for attachment.

Compression springs are used in variety of industries such as automotive, electronics, medical, commercial good and industrial. People use this type of springs in mattresses and in earth quake resistant foundations.

Compression springs are made of thicker gauge wire and they are not wounds in tight coils. This type of spring absorbs potential energy and releases energy as it expands. The springs can be customized in various sizes and materials and they suit different needs. The common materials for compression springs are chrome-silicon, high carbon steel wire, stainless steel, alloy steel or music wire, brass, zinc, nickel. The temperature range has a significant impact on spring material selection.

Extension springs are made for smaller gauge wire and wound tightly. The work of this type of the spring depends on the distance. The further it is extended, the more force is on the spring. Extension springsare used in trampolines to create bouncing effact, screen door,garage doors, car seat and many other things we use daily.
