The city council in Elk Grove, California, gave two developers the go-ahead to begin construction on newcheap apartments in the spring.

Approval was granted on the construction of the Laguna Ridge Apartments complex, a project featuring 18 residential buildings and a community clubhouse in the city's Madeira area, reported the Elk Grove Citizen. Additionally, the 68-unit Vintage at Laguna II senior housing complex will be built next to that development's existing first phase. The Laguna project, in particular, overcame major hurdles before getting approved, said the report. City planners were set to deny the project until the planning commission decided to give developers extra time to meet certain zoning requirements, which would allow the city to remain within stateaffordable housingguidelines.

"We knew we could work with staff to find a project that worked," Ardie Zahedani, representing the company behind Laguna, told the paper. "The council's vision and staff's expediency and responsiveness allowed us to create a project that received community support while creating over 200 new units for working families."

Meanwhile, developers with Vintage are hoping city revenues will rise before construction begins in order to close a critical gap in the affordable housing funds Elk Grove will provide, said the report.

The Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency also manages affordable housing in Elk Grove. Recently, the housing authority announced it would open its public and elderly housing waiting list to new applicants seeking low-income housing in communities such as Elk Grove.
