. Computer maintenance or computer cleanup will assure that your computer is working properly at its optimum level. Let this article be your basic guide on what to check and remove on your computer in order to free some precious hard drive space.
Remove programs properly in order to avoid corruption. As a bonus, we will look at some signs and symptoms of a computer that is infected with virus or spyware.
Some typical warning signs that your computer has been infected with a virus are if your computer is running slowly with multiple pop-ups or error message and automatically restarting brings you to a different website than you intended. The maintenance steps below will help you clean up your computer and hopefully remove the infection too.
Matter occupies space. This principle also applies to your computer and all of the programs that were added or installed onto your computer automatically, such as Windows updates and anti-virus updates. Manually installed software are those you installed yourself, for example games, antivirus programs and Microsoft Word and Excel. All this will take up some space on your hard drive. The more programs you have, the longer the system will take to search for exaclty what you need. Your computer saves program in a sequence to your hard drive.
The first step in performing a computer clean up is removing unwanted and unused programs on your computer. The best way to uninstall unwanted program is by using uninstall/remove programs in control panel if you are using a Windows operating system. If you still have the installation disk of the program you want to remove, insert it and usually it will give you an option to uninstall it. What you need to do is click the Start button > All programs, this will list all programs installed. Run through the list and take note of the programs that are not being used. The next step is to remove files that are outdated and delete them. Go through your photos and sort them out, remove the ones that you don't like. Delete music files that you don't play anymore.
After removing unwanted files and programs, it will be best if you do a virus and spyware scan on your computer. This will make sure traces of infection will be removed completely. The last step is to perform hard drive defragmentation. After deleting those unwanted clutters from your hard drive it produces blank cluster, defrag will remove those blank cluster and compress the space, making the access of files easier causing the computer to work much faster.
