. The year 2011 brought us groundbreaking RPGs like Skyrim, Star Wars: The Old Republic and Dragon Age II but publishers and developers alike are looking to top that lineup in 2012. And with new GPUs and CPUs on the way, companies like Blizzard are looking to push classic franchises like Diablo and StarCraft to new limits in terms of both gameplay and presentation. Without further ado, let's have a look at a few of the RPG games you should be watching in 2012.

Diablo III - For a good while, gamers were starting to wonder whether or not Diablo III would ever see a release date, but as if from nowhere, a Blizzard representative recently descended from the heavens to announce an official release date of May 15, 2012 and then disappeared as quickly as he came. Many gamers have been enjoying the beta for some time and are unanimously singing praises of the game's vastly improved visuals and gameplay. Those who have played Diablo games of old know that the series delivers a highly-addictive dungeon crawling experience best enjoyed with many close friends.

Tera - Developed by Atari and set for a release date of May 1, 2012, Tera looks like it could be a sleeper hit for the old school development company. Atari and the companies responsible for publicizing the title haven't put a lot of effort into the marketing of Tera, but from what we've seen so far, the game is quite satisfying. Tera is an action MMORPG that looks fantastic and plays very little like a traditional MMO. The developers were clearly looking to avoid the somewhat passive sort of gameplay commonly associated with titles like World of Warcraft and Star Wars: The Old Republic in favor of a more engaging combat system. The result is a stunning, fantasy-based MMO with tons of available player customization options and comfortable control schemes.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm - While Heart of the Swarm, another Blizzard project, may not see a 2012 release date, we'll certainly be learning a lot more about the title within the coming months. A sequel to StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (released in the summer of 2010), Heart of the Swarm is the Zerg expansion to the highly-acclaimed Terran-focused installment and will reportedly be priced as such. Though Blizzard has only offered small glimpses into the title with screenshots and a recent trailer, it is believed that the sequel will bring a number of multiplayer unit additions (as well as a couple subtractions) and will include around 20 to 25 campaign missions.

If you've been itching for a new role-playing game experience, whether in the form of a single player or multiplayer adventure, 2012 is sure to have something in store for you. And just to clarify, at the time of this writing, Mass Effect 3 had already been released and reviewed by a majority of the major game critics out there. The title was thoroughly enjoyable, and if you can get past the unavoidable cloud of negativity surrounding the title's ending, it's certainly worth diving in to.
