Conan O'Brien Ratings Fall: Late Night on TBS

Conan is back! Conan O'Brien, the former late night host of The Tonight Show for a short stint of seven months is finally back. The comedian was also the host of another NBC talk show for 16 years called Late Night. NBC paid $45 million to buy Conan's The Tonight Show contract with the agreement that he hold out for an explicit amount of time before he was allowed to be the host of another program. Obviously, as of this past Monday, his wait is over and he is once again hosting his own late night television program appropriately named "Conan," which airs weeknights at 11:00 pm EST on TBS.

On Monday evening, the highly anticipated premiere of "Conan" on TBS did very well in the Nielsen television ratings with over 4 million viewers, defeating both Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" with 3.5 million viewers and David Letterman on "The Late Show" with 3.4 million viewers. Yet on the second night of his return on TBS, "Conan" only had 2.8 million that watched his show and the third night dropped again to 2.7 million. O'Brien's viewers are leaning toward a youthful audience; of the over 4 million who watched "Conan" the first night, over 3 million viewers were between the ages of 18 and 49.

Bill Carter, who wrote a book about the war of ratings that has gone on in the past between Jay Leno and Conan OBrien entitled "The War for Late Night" said in referring to Conan O'Brien, "his audience composition with a median age of 30 is unbelievable for late-night television." Attracting the attention of a younger age group is pleasing to promoters who will spend much more money to market on his show since this group is the hardest age to catch the attention of on television. So even though the ratings have fallen since the premiere, if "Conan" can maintain the young viewers he shouldn't have to be anxious about rankings.
