Concrete Construction

There are many benefits to concrete construction. Some of the benefits are that concrete structures don't need the normal fire protection as they are inherent to up to four hours of fire resistance. But, to meet part E of the Building Regulations, additional finishes to wall and floors are often required. It is also inherent to other benefits such as fabric energy storage, sound insulation, which means lower operating costs and lower maintenance costs.

It is also one of the most widely used construction materials dating back to ancient civilization. As early as 7000 BC. It is composed of cement, crushed rock or gravel, sand and water. There is often a chemical admixture and some other materials.

Because it is made from these materials it is considered to be a sustainable material. It is composed of some of the most abundant resources, and can be broken back down and remixed. Recycling or reusing structures is considered a least waste option. Some construction companies manage to reuse or recycle up to 70% of concrete from their waste streams.

Concrete masonry is used in a myriad of building types, and is sometimes reinforced with steel cable and rebar.

Interlocking concrete paving-is more durable, attractive and cost-effective than any other paving system on the market.

Segmental Retaining Walls-are easy to install, cost-effective, and more durable than other earth retaining systems.

Concrete Masonry Units-have many shapes and textures.

Articulated Concrete Block Paving-is emerging because it's a cost effective system for preventing soil erosion through the engineered use of this specialized concrete shape.

Precast concrete foundations and wall panels can consist of steel reinforced concrete ribs that run horizontally in the panels. Others are precast panels.

Concrete masonry

Modern masonry construction is a tried and tested method long popular in Brittan and Western Europe and responsible for 90% of the new homes built in the last ten years. High productivity concrete block work allows construction times to be reduced, with gains in robustness, acoustics, durability, and fire resistance.

Permeable Concrete Paving

Concrete paving blocks are attractive, durable and cost effective for landscaping around housing developments. Innovative thinking has turned concrete paving into a sustainable solution to tackle problems caused by rainwater runoff from the site. Permeable concrete paving allows rainwater to drain through the paved surface in a controlled way into the ground before being released into sewers or water courses. Sustainable drainage systems incorporating permeable concrete paving and precast tanks and pipes also allow the capture of water for re-use for non-potable purposes such as garden watering and toilet flushing.

Insitu Concrete

Ready- mixed concrete is made under factory controlled conditions. For large projects it can be used in systems such as tunnel form and in smaller projects in innovative systems such as insulating concrete framework. Today's ready-mixed concrete is a modern construction material offering factory controlled quality, exact quantities and minimal waste.

Insulating Concrete Form-work

Is a building system that provides permanent insulated form-work for in-situ concrete walls and floors in housing. It consists of twin-walled expanded polystyrene panels or blocks filled with ready-mixed concrete. The result is a wall structure ready to accept the roof or floor construction, thermally insulated by the EPS which remains in place, with a uniform surface ready for the direct application of plasterboard or proprietary cladding systems.

Modern Concrete Basements

Land availability and quality are declining while cost has been steadily increasing. At the same time homeowners wish they could have more living space for recreation and increased storage. The introduction of a modern concrete basement offers a better use of land with no overall change in the height of the building, potential energy savings of 10%, and increases the value of the property.

A pre-completion pressure test is required. Failure of this test means a time consuming process of inspecting joints and interfaces, then resealing them where necessary. Concrete edge details are easier to seal and have less risk of failure. Some contractors have switched to concrete frames on this criterion alone.

Concrete is on fact one of the sustainable building materials in terms of both energy consumed during manufacture and its inherent thermal mass properties in use. It also has the potential to make a massive positive contribution to the effort to reduce its CO2 emissions in the near and longer term. It offers the key to lowering energy consumption by minimizing the need for air-conditioning in offices by providing the highest standards of insulation.
