Front disc brakes can sometimes have a problem that sneaks up on you

. When a car pulls to one side when braking, its not always noticeable at first, but can eventually get worse, creating an unsafe driving condition which could lead to loss of driver control. It may not be evident at slow speeds, but a panic - stop or hard braking in a corner can surprise a driver if the car pulls to one side when braking. This braking condition needs to be corrected immediately.

Front brake calipers are designed to 'float' or slide on their mounting surfaces. Dirt, road grime, brake pad dust, and surface rust can build up between these surfaces inhibiting the calipers to slide properly. One caliper can be slower to grab than the other, which is why the car pulls to one side when braking. Most would assume that oil or grease may have contaminated the brake pads; but this is not always the case.

There is an easy fix if your car pulls to one side when braking. Raise the car and remove wheel. Unbolt brake caliper and lift off of mounting bracket. Don't let it hang by the brake hose, put a jack stand or block of wood under it for support. Inspect the mating surfaces of both the brake caliper and mounting bracket. Using emery cloth or sandpaper, sand these surfaces to remove any build-up of rust, brake pad material or road dirt. Wipe areas clean with a shop rag, repeating the process until all mounting surfaces are clean and smooth. Put a dab of high-temperature disc brake bearing grease on all the mating surfaces, be careful to avoid getting any on brake rotor or pads. Using your finger, spread the grease on the clean surfaces to allow the grease to get in the pores of the metal. Wipe off any excess. Reinstall brake caliper, use brake cleaner to spray off any grease that may have touched brake pads or brake rotor. Repeat process for other side.

Test drive car on a straight road at slow speeds, apply brakes, feel for any pulling sensation. Test at different speeds. Pat yourself on the back for a job well-done, and the money you saved by doing it yourself.
