Confessional Lutheran Church Omaha
Hi, my name is Steve Sleeper and I'm a Deacon at Lamb of God Lutheran Church
, Omaha. We're a Confessional Lutheran Church Omaha and our Pastor is Phillip Houser. I asked Pastor Houser what it means to be a Confessional Lutheran Church.
[Pastor Houser] To be a Confessional Lutheran Church means to make the good confession. Peter, in the Gospels, made the good confession when he said, You are the Christ, the son of the living God. That's a very brief summation of the Christian faith. There's a lot more that needs to be said of course and a lot more that is said in the Holy Scripture but ultimately, to make the good confession, that is to say to be confessional, one would be faithful to what we have had revealed to us in the scriptures that other people have confessed.
The 66 books of the Bible are all written by men who have made that good confession of the truth. It comes from God. And we read it and study it, we learn it, we hopefully know it, and then we proclaim it, we confess it. In the form of
Sermons and by God's grace, faithful Sermons, and not just my opinions about what ought to be or is or whatever.
But in a wider sense; our whole congregation and Church body. Finally, hopefully the entire Christian church confessing the truth of who Jesus is, of what God has done for us through Christ, of what he continues to do and the hope we have.
This is the hope of the world, of course. And so we make that good confession. To be a Confessional Lutheran Church is to cling to the truth as we have had it delivered to us by the prophets and apostles in the Old and New Testaments.
[Steve Sleeper] Okay. So, that's what it means to be a Confessional Lutheran Church Omaha. Pastor Houser, what are the Lutheran Confessions?
[Pastor Houser] The Lutheran Confessions are a collection of texts that dates from the Reformation period where the reformers stated the faith as they believed the scriptures taught them. The foundational document of The Lutheran Confessions is the Augsburg Confession. This is a confession of the faith in 28 articles that deals with 20 different issues wherein Lutheran reformers said, Okay, on this particular issue this is what we believe. All of those 28 articles have to do with different topics. We, as Lutheran Christians, have read the scriptures and then we have, by extension, read the Lutheran Confessions - including the Augsburg Confession. We believe those books in the Lutheran confessions teach the truth. We believe they are right in retelling what the scriptures have to say and so we confess them. We subscribe to them. Or in another words, we basically say Amen to them.
The Lutheran Confessions are not Holy Scripture. The Holy Scriptures are the only rule of norm of faith and life. We get the truth from God out of and through the Holy Scriptures alone, but the Lutheran Confessions rightly retell what we see in scripture.
