I suppose that my love for red apples began at the tender age of 4, when my mother often took me to Bintze's Apple Farm on the outskirts of my hometown of Saginaw, Michigan, along the Tittabawassee River. I always knew when I was getting close to Bintze's because I could see thehuge three-story bright and shiny red applelooming high in the distance. As part of the tour, we got the opportunity to go up inside that tall red apple and actually see how juice, sauce and cider were made. By the way, that apple still stands to this day, relocated to a golf course justdown the street.
Of all the field trips and tours and amusement parks I've ever attended, I don't believe any of them have given me quite the thrill as my time spent onBintze's Apple Farm. It was then that my love for red apples took seed, pun intended.I began tofind anything withred apples on it and I am now quite proud of my collection. I have a cookie jar, refrigerator magnets, light switch plates, throw rugs, artwork, dishtowels, paper weights, baskets full and lapel pins galore that display my beloved red apples. Whenever people enter my kitchen, there is no doubt how much I love red apples, for they can see them all around.
Nowcomes the confession of this picky apple eater: I do not now, nor have I ever liked the taste of the red apple. I just like the look of the red apple. My all time favorite, the only real choice for me is the Granny Smith. I am drawn to the tart, slightly sour, crisp and firm Granny Smith apple. I don't know who Granny Smith was, but she makes a great apple!
My realization of this fact led me to an even deeper discovery about not only myself, but others as well. When people see us and hear us speaking "Christianese", they naturally think that we love what we display to love. But deeper seeking reveals that we don't love Christ at all like we claim to love Him. Sure, we love the way christianity LOOKS. But few of us are ever really satisfied with the way christianity TASTES. We want Christ in our lives, but we don't want Him in our hearts. We want to be on the books (the church roll) but we don't want The Book (the Bible)in us. We want to walk with the Lord, but then we want to run with the devil. We want, as the song says, to wear the crown, but we don't want to bear the cross; we want to be seen, but we don't want to live clean.
The look of christianity shows kindness, regard for others, a healthy respect for all that is trueand right and good and just and fair. The taste of christianity can be extremelydisciplined, with a straight way and a narrow gate. It can taste bitter and lonely and weary and questioning. It is full of wondering, with, as author Stormie Omartian says, "Just Enough Light for the Step I'm On." Oh yes, we love the way living like Christ looks, but few of us want to drink from the bitter cup of suffering, trial and persecution.
And here's yet another confession: In addition to the spiritual correlations between the red and green apples, mydiscovery also led toten things about even the green apples that I don't like and natuarlly, the spiritual comparison of those points as well. I will tell you those ten things now, andthen I'll expound uponthem inmy next article.
1. I don't like the seeds.
2. I don't eat the core.
3. I don't like it if it's too mushy inside.
4. I prefer to cut it and not just bite right into it.
5. I don't like the skin.
6. It doesn't taste good if I've just brushed my teeth.
7. Once it's been bitten, I don't want to eat anymore if it turns brown.
8. I don't like it unless it is luke warm.
9. I only like them in the morning.
10. I don't like the apples that have bruises on them.
