Confused About Hair Loss? Review The Common Causes Of Baldness

Male pattern baldness can be a very stressful condition for any man experiencing it

. Perhaps it would be comforting to know that sufferers have done absolutely nothing to cause it in most cases, but rather inherited this trait.

Many myths surround male pattern baldness, such as the thought that it is inherited from your maternal grandfather. However, this belief is incorrect. There have been recent studies showing that it may in fact be inherited from the fathers genes as well.

Despite continued research, the exact method of inheritance for the male pattern baldness trait is not known. Some sufferers have no family members who have male pattern baldness. Others who have fathers or grandfathers who are bald will never go bald themselves.

The actual cause of the hair loss that leads to male pattern baldness is the effect of the hormone testosterone on the hair follicles. Testosterone is present in all males in high concentrations after puberty. This hormone is converted to DHT via an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. DHT is very detrimental to a hair follicle, and will cause it to produce weak, short or no hair after attaching to the receptor.

Male pattern baldness typically occurs over a long period of time, and may begin in the early teens or later in life. Those who experience hair loss in younger years will typically lose more hair overall.

The name of this condition is a result of the actual pattern that hair is lost in. It will sometimes start at the temples or simply as a receding hair line, and eventually progress to total or partial baldness.

Some prescription and over-the-counter medications are available to attempt to thwart the effects of hair loss and regrow hair, and hair transplant surgery continues to be a popular treatment option. However, your doctor should be notified of any hair loss experienced, and a full exam conducted to ensure you do not have any underlying conditions that could cause male pattern baldness or symptoms similar to male pattern baldness.
