Congress President finds irregularities during surprise visit to Lucknow hospital

Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi undertook a detour on her way to 3 day visit to Rae Bareli and went to visit poor patients at the Indira Gandhi Eye Hospital in Kaiserbagh area of Lucknow. On enquiring about the facilities being received by the patients, she was informed by the patients that they were being asked to pay Rs. 100 instead of the official rate of Rs. 6 for treatment at the hospital. Smt. Gandhi immediately asked the hospital authorities to look in to the complaint.

Congress President landed at Amausi Airport this morning and was heading to Rae Bareli for a three-day visit, when she made an unannounced trip to the hospital. Smt. Gandhi is undertaking this visit to interact with the people of Rae Bareli and to take a first hand assessment of the progress of the development schemes launched by the Centre.

On her way from Lucknow, Smt. Gandhi's first stop was at Kumbhi in Shivghar village where she interacted with the villagers and listened to the problems being faced by them on various issues. Sitting on a cot amongst the villagers, Congress President enquired from the villagers about the implementation of MNREGS, Old-age Pension scheme, Rural electrification and other developmental schemes. When Smt. Gandhi came to know from a villager that though he had a job card under MNREGS but was not being paid money, she immediately asked the BDO concerned to look into the matter and redress the problem. She was also informed that despite the irrigation canal being dry for last 4 years, the villagers were being served with undue electricity bills.

Congress President also stopped at Barkheda to meet with the people present there. Smt. Gandhi also went to the Durga Mata Mandir, known popularly as Barkhendeshwar temple in Barakheda and directed officials to ensure construction of road leading to the famous shrine.

The next stops of Congress President were at Harlaur, Maha Garvi, Donapur and Takia Churahe in Ammo block. She interacted with villagers at all these stops and listened to their problems and grievances. She also interacted with students of a Madarsa at Harlaur.

Congress President is expected to hold a meeting of party members during her visit to Rae Bareli.
