Congress-TMC alliance to bring development to West Bengal : Rahul Gandhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was in Naxalabari, Darjeeling district, Northern Bengal today for holding rally in support of the Congress and Trinamool Congress candidates. Addressing his first election meeting in this belt the General Secretary asked the people of West Bengal to end the 34-year-old "misrule" of CPI(M) and elect a government of "aam admi" in the coming polls.
Rahul Gandhi referred to failures of ruling CPI-M in education, attracting investment and controlling unemployment. Left Front government took the state backwards while the rest of the country was advancing, the Congress Leader said. "The government should be of 'aam admi' (common man) and think of the welfare of the people, butthe ruling Left Front thinks of its own organisation and cadres first and then for the people of the state," Rahul Gandhi said.
Highlighting that the state was having the highest rate of school dropouts at 80 per cent, he said industrialists which were to provide employment gave the left ruled state a go-by while choosing states like Maharashtra, Delhi or Tamil Nadu. It was because of the Left Front's mindset, Rahul Gandhi explained.
"We, the Congress and Trinamool Congress are fighting together and will give a government that will bring development to West Bengal," the Congress Leader said.
Rahul Gandhi explained that the UPA government at the Centre has
introduced several welfare schemes for the people including MGNREGA and SSA which are meant to generate guaranteed employment locally for poor people. The All India General Secretary said, "We gave back Rs 70,000 crore to the farmers. Through the Tribal Act, we gave back land to the tribals,".
The North Bengal region has hundreds of tea gardens with a large percentage of tribal population who make their livelihood by mainly working in the gardens. "These large public schemes require huge funds which come from economic growth," Rahul Gandhi said at the well-attended rally. Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supporters were also seen in the rally with their party flags. GJM led by Bimal Gurung has announced its unilateral support to the Congress-TC alliance.
Rahul Gandhi explained that the state was having 15 per cent urban employment, while it suffered from 10 per cent rural unemployment.
The top Congress leader predicted that the people would vote out the 34-year-old Left Front government in the coming polls. The young leader, Rahul Gandhi while addressing the rally was full of energy and exuberance.
54 seats in six districts of the region are going to polls on April 18 in the six-phase West Bengal Assembly elections.
