Consider Robotic Surgery For Cardiac Problems
Technological advancements are an amazing thing
. Open heart surgical procedures have always been severe, and even with robotic surgery, it still is serious. The difference is that rather than having to open up the chest cavity, two small incisions can be used. The recovery time and after-surgery risks are diminished as well. If you have been avoiding a surgical procedure for a valve or some other issue, you may feel better about using this process.
Perhaps the thought of a robot doing a surgical procedure is a little frightening to you. Maybe when you think about it you picture the traditional idea of a robot. Maybe it makes you wonder what would happen if this robot were to malfunction in the middle of the procedure. Of course this is always a possibility, but probably not much more of a possibility than the surgeon himself making an error. With robotic surgery, the surgeon is still in control through wrist controls. Keep this possibility for a surgical procedure in mind, but try to get rid of the picture in your mind of a Star Wars robot opening up your chest. It will still be your human surgeon doing much of the work.
There are many reasons to consider this procedure. Complications are less likely. Your overall hospital stay will probably be shorter, including your time in ICU. You might not end up needing blood transfusions. The risk of having a problem take place with your heart during the first year after the procedure is less likely. Another benefit that is specific to the mitral valve is that if you have robotic surgery, you are less likely to need the valve actually replaced. There is more of a possibility that it will just need to be repaired. One of the most significant benefits may be that they only need to make two incisions versus opening up the chest cavity.
Overall, robotic surgery for cardiac issues is a great option. If you are interested, you will want to speak with your cardiologist to see if it is an option in your area and if you are a good candidate for a surgical procedure of this kind. Your cardiologist should also know the surgeons who are adept at using this process for surgeries, and he or she should be able to refer you to them.
You will not regret taking this opportunity to use new technology. Be assured that a surgeon would never use technology on your body that has not been tested excessively first. There is far too much risk for the surgeon if he or she chose to do this.
