Consider Tignes For Your Winter Ski Holiday

When you're trying to find a good quality, self-catered rather than a catered chalet

for your ski holiday in the Alps, you have a number of resorts to choose from. Here is a quick guide to Tignes, one of the most popular resorts in the Alps, to help you to decide whether it is one you would like to stay in.

Overview of Tignes

Tignes is known for being one of the highest ski resorts found anywhere in Europe. The height of the village is 2,100 metres, and you can go a lot higher if you choose to ski to the Grand Motte, where you will reach heights of 3,455 metres.

When looking for a self catered chalet in a resort that offers excellent skiing, Tignes is a fantastic option. But this is very much a resort for dedicated skiers, so if you are travelling as a family with a few learner skiers in the group it may not be the best option.

The skiing here is very popular with advanced skiers, and the off-piste skiing is especially good. Tignes is linked to Val dIsere to form a larger ski area comprising 300 kilometres of pistes, and the snow reliability is excellent across the whole area.

The resort may be considered a little stark, as because of its altitude there are fewer trees than in others; for a quaint, catered chalet you might want to look at another resort, but for self-catered options, the selection is good.

Having said all that, there is a good ski school and a nursery slope, and Tignes is trying to change its image to attract more families and not just advanced skiers.

Getting to Tignes

Tignes is easy to reach by road, and you can travel by motorway nearly the whole way from Calais. Alternatively, travel by rail to the station at Bourg St Maurice, which is just 45 minutes away from the resort. If you want to fly, book a flight to either Geneva or Chambery. The journey to the resort is just a few hours from both airports, and you can easily arrange a transfer.

Activities in Tignes

There are many activities to get involved in during your time in Tignes if you want to have a bit of a break from skiing. These include paragliding, ice driving, snowshoeing, dog sledding, ice climbing, helicopter tours, mountain biking and more, so you will not have difficulty finding something to keep you busy.

Tignes is a fantastic resort and if you are not fussed about a catered chalet but rather want non-catered accommodation, you will have a large range to choose from here. There are plenty of other excellent resorts in the Alps for you to choose from, too, so have a look and see if any appeal to you.
