Considerations For Building A Carport

There are a number of different things to consider when making the decision to add a carport to your existing dwelling

The first thing to consider is the placement of the carport. Carports can be either stand alone structures or, more commonly, can be attached to the side of an existing structure. There are pros and cons to both types of carport.

Generally speaking, stand alone carports are larger, placed at a generous distance from other structures, and are used to shelter items that don't have daily use. Often stand alone carports are used in industrial settings. Attached carports are commonly used in residential areas and are almost strictly used to shelter the family car.

Think carefully, about what you intend to use the carport for. RV carports are becoming more and more popular. These larger versions of the typical carport are often set away from the house. Often the space available for a carport will dictate the type of carport you must choose. If you are super tight for space, a metal carport is a little more stream lined than a more substantial wood carport.

Another thing to consider is the type of roof. Carports can be constructed with a flat roof, single slope roof, shed roof, or gable roof. Typically the shed and gable roof tend to be the most attractive. However, a flat roof has the distinct advantage of being able to support a second floor while a single slope roof is an excellent choice for small spaces.
