Considering Volunteering With Your Local Animal Rescue

All of us have our reasons for volunteering

All of us have our reasons for volunteering. Families bring their young children to teach them about community service, many of us are passionate about a cause, and groups will come from companies as a team building exercise. These are just three of what could be hundreds of reasons why an individual might volunteer for a local non-profit.

Whatever your reason might be, you are making a difference. From walking shelter dogs, answering the phones or working at a fundraiser, your time spent volunteering saves animal's lives.

The benefits of volunteering are manifold:

1. You become a part of the solution. We often look at our own pets and wonder how we can translate that love and devotion to saving the lives of like animals. Calling your local rescue and making the first step immediately puts you into the "solution group".

2. The feeling inside that you are making a difference. Walking a dog or holding a cat that comes from a life of abuse cannot be measured in any human form. Take a chance, give love and watch it return to you ten-fold.

3. Networking with like-minded individuals. Rescues attract people who are committed to making our communities a safe haven for pets. You will meet and most likely become friends with wonderful like-minded people.

4. Unlock your hidden talents. Working in a non-profit often means that you become a jack-of-all-trades. Rescues have limited budgets and there is no money to hire the staff needed to fulfill the mission. So maybe you have never stuffed envelopes, been asked to serve on the fundraising committee or walk a large dog. Whatever your skill set is, there is a spot for you. Volunteer and discover your hidden abilities.

5. A new direction in your professional life. Having volunteer time on your resume looks positive with future employers and colleges. Companies want to hire people who are committed to our communities. Maybe you like the shelter work so much and you become such a valuable volunteer, that you will create a career for yourself. (Of course then you and the shelter would need to find a way to fund the new position!)

So what's stopping you today? Go online and research the animal rescues in your community. Yes, you an individual of one, can save an animal's life today. Call and email the shelter and ask them what you can do. Bring the kids or a group from the office. Most importantly, get involved.
