Construction Rentals Are Up

In 2011, global sales of construction equipment grew by a record 25 percent

. The upsurge in sales was driven be a rebound in the North American, European and Japanese construction markets, according to reports made by the KHL Group. The KHL Group is the worlds leading supplier of international construction information. The information provided by the KHL Group is distributed via magazines, newsletters, events and exhibitions. In this instance, the information was retrieved by the groups annual Yellow Table survey.

The survey found that, in addition to an upsurge in construction rentals, an increase was also noted in regards to total units sold. Just prior to the financial crisis, the worlds 50 largest construction equipment manufacturers sold about $168 billion. Since 2008, the number dwindled and no hope was to be seen for the construction industry. This changed last year when the number exceeded $180 billion, a number that is not only impressive considering the harsh economic climate, but a number that is impressive in any type of economy.

Companies based in the United States made up 31.2 percent of the total revenue in 2011, up from the 29.5 percent of the previous year. According to Chris Sleight, author of the Yellow Table survey, Japan accounted for approximately 23 percent of the total construction equipment sales documented in the survey. Additionally, China saw a growth in construction equipment sales as well. The country made up about 15 percent of total sales in 2010 and 16.9 percent in 2011, a drastic difference from the 1.6 percent documented in the same study performed in 2003.

The top two construction equipment manufacturers in the world, as they have been for the past decade, are U.S-based Caterpillar and Japan-based Komatsu. Experts agree that these two manufacturers will continue to be leaders in the industry, regardless of the economic climates or situations of their respective countries. In a surprising turn of events, Swedish-based Volvo Construction Equipment, U.S companies Terex and John Deere, and Chinese groups Sany and Zoomlion entered the top ten of the worlds construction equipment manufacturers. To make room for these companies, Hitachi Construction Machinery, South Korean-based Doosan Infracore and the Chinese company XCMG all fell from the top ten slots on the list.

The Yellow Table survey is performed annually by the KHL Group, and the results vary from year to year. In 2013, the slashing of Chinas stimulus spending programs and North Americas continued financial and economic recovery will be contributing factors to the results of next years survey.
