Consumer Reports Confirm Signal Problem With iPhone 4

This is getting so old now. The debate surrounding the signal problems people are experiencing with their new iPhones rages on, with Consumer Reports being the latest to weigh in with their evaluation of Apple's new toy.

Consumer Reports is possibly the biggest, most trusted consumer magazine in the USA; people listen when they talk. So when they released their final evaluation of the iPhone 4 recently, quite a few ears perked up.

They thoroughly tested three of the new iPhones in a radio frequency isolation chamber, which is impervious to outside radio signals. The phones were connected to a base-station emulator (a device that simulates carrier cell towers), and no other phones tested alongside the Apple products (including the iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre) experienced the signal problems of the iPhone 4. The result? Consumer Reports "can't recommend the iPhone 4".

The magazine does, however, recommend that an affordable fix for those with signal problems is to "cover the antenna gap with a piece of duct tape". One can't help but think they're having a little fun theremust work though.

As someone who doesn't have an opinion about Apple gadgets either way, I find Jobs and Co.'s response to the public debate ludicrous. First, Apple said there was no problem. Then, it was a software issue that caused the phone to display two more signal strength bars than it should have. What?

I suppose you have to give credit to all the Apple fangirls and boys who have rallied to Apple's defence. They're flooding online forums with claims that they haven't had a single issue with their iPhone 4, and almost implying that the thousands (hundreds of thousandsmore?) of people who are experiencing problems either don't own an iPhone anyway, or are too ignorant to use it properly...and here I thought mindless arrogance was exclusive to Apple.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think anyone should take Consumer Reports' word as gospel, either. But it's hard to ignore so many complaints from users, along with the test results of a widely-respected consumer magazine.

So, Apple enthusiasts, stop blindly worshipping a corporate brand, and acknowledge that just because YOU don't have any issues with your high-tech paperweight, someone else just might. There's no smoke without fire, remember.
