, whether the plants are grown in the garden or in a five-gallon bucket. Container gardening is popular for people who lack the land to put in a traditional garden. However the idea of growing things in a container has opened up endless possibilities in the gardening world.

Potted salad gardens are popular for balconies and porches so growers have easy access to the lettuce and other vegetables. To build a potted salad garden start with a deep pot so the vegetables have room to grow a healthy root system. Tomatoes have a long tap-root and need plenty of water to develop fruit. You can plant lettuce, a pepper plant, a cucumber vine and cherry tomatoes in one container. A plant dolly under the pot makes the container easy to move into direct sunlight or out of danger when inclement weather occurs.

Herbs may become invasive when planted in a traditional garden. Keep your herbs within reach and separated by inserting three or four smaller pots into one large container. Set the herb garden planter close to the house so you can have fresh herbs at your fingertips. Move the planter indoors in a sunny place during the winter for fresh herbs year round.

New organic gardeners may find growing vegetables in containers one way to experience gardening without pesticides or other chemicals. The sterile planter holds organic planting material and is sown with organic seeds for a natural growing method. Rain water adds natural moisture to the soil and the organic matter used during planting adds the nutrients the plants need to produce a harvest.

Dwarf fruit trees and low-growing varieties of blueberry shrubs make excellent specimens for growing on a patio, porch or balcony. The space needed is less than traditional trees and shrubs and the plants produce enough fruit for table use. Strawberry plants do well in containers and the yield grows each year.

Just about any container that holds soil works for container gardening, from old mixing bowls and kettles to painted cans and used wicker baskets. Metal wash tubs, broken wheelbarrows and old tires keep plants contained and are portable if need be. Attach chains to three sides of two or three planters and connect the chains together to create a tiered garden. A vining plant, such as morning glories, planted in the bottom container will grow up the chains during the growing season.

Pests and diseases generally create less damage to plants because you notice the problems earlier. Rodents and other wildlife generally avoid plants that are in containers due to the closeness of the house. Plants are watered quickly due to visibly drooping foliage or dying blooms. The benefits to growing a planter garden include adding colorful blooms and foliage where there is no soil and bringing the gardening experience to places where conventional gardening practices are impossible. New and experienced gardeners, no matter the age or limitations, can grow a beautiful bloom in a planter.
