Large boats and ferries usually leave a trail of oil when traveling through bodies of water such as rivers, seas and oceans

These large oil spills contribute to the deterioration of different bodies of water around the globe, which therefore has a significant impact not only on aquatic habitats but also to humanity.

One of the solutions in controlling these unnecessary oil spills is the use of containment booms . These booms act as a barrier to prevent the oil from spreading farther into the waters surface. They float in the water which therefore contains the oil spill within their hold. They also control the oil from going to the shore, which may affect nearby residents or beach areas that are commonly populated by people.

The use of containment booms is the most common method of containment before starting to clean up the water surface of oil spills. Since they hold the oil, it is easier for workers to vacuum or absorb the oil within the booms contained area. This saves industrial companies a lot of time in cleaning up the oil spills. There had been many issues raised due to industrial companies negligence of oil spills, which have resulted in ecological and economic crises. One example is the Gulf Oil Spill, where not only thousands of animals have died, but have also resulted in beaches being closed. The supply of seafood has also greatly dwindled, leading to seafood restaurants in the Gulf shutting down.

Protests and campaigns all over the globe that aims to save marine life forms have been occurring not only over that oil spill, but for more than two decades. Today, industrial companies and ship owners are more aware of their responsibilities to prevent and clean up after their mess to avoid a repeat of those incidents. Using oil spill solutions do not only help prevent widespread marine life deterioration but it also helps the companies become more responsible in conducting their businesses.

Containment booms can be considered as a preventive measure that saves lives. Indirectly speaking, if not for these containment booms, there would be a whole lot of dead fish floating in the sea. The coral reefs end up destroyed, which leaves aquatic animals no room for breeding and laying their eggs. Therefore, it would result to food shortage for the human beings.

It can also prevent humans from swimming into deeper but contaminated, oily waters from relatively clean beaches. After all, contact with these spills amount to illnesses. And if oil spills spread further, they could also contaminate the water system that would bring illnesses and other toxic effects to human, animals, and vegetation. That is why use of containment booms is very important in controlling oil spills in the sea.
