As a believer of Christ, we are taught to pray everyday

. Prayer is an important part of Christian walk. Jesus said whatever we ask, He will answer. The best way of prayer is always being searched out and debated about. The prayer movement exploding out globally now is characterized by an emphasis on the intimacy with God. And a particular form of prayer related to this theme is contemplative prayer.

Some believe that contemplative prayer is completely different from meditation. But in practice, they blend with each other and overlap with each other a lot. Some Christians are taught to start waiting upon the Lord' by meditating on bible verses and then as he/she continues, he/she will reach a state where he/she ceases to think or ponder and just receive.

First kind of contemplative prayer is called natural or acquired contemplation. It is done by being alone and gazing upon the Lord silently. The person should fix his attention on the Lord Jesus. It is also known as the prayer of faith, prayer of simple regard, prayer of simplicity, prayer of heart, active quiet and active recollection.

Some persons throughout the human history experienced so called infused contemplation or supernatural contemplation. In this state, the person has his mind totally focused on God and have divine union with Him. However, this is very uncommon and is only experienced by few people.

At the first stage of a contemplative prayer life, the strength of the divine action is weak or even cannot be sensed. It would feel dry or distasteful. A person who want to pursue God with this method would have to endure this and continue by believing that better ecstasy will come eventually. That's why contemplation is also know as a prayer of faith. As he moves forward, he maybe able to experience higher ecstasy or union with God, when the strength of divine action would keep him away from distraction or even to the point where the person cannot cease from praying at will.

In modern days, as the rises of houses of prayer around the world, this kind of soaking prayer becomes more common. Musicians and singers are producing music specifically for the purpose of soaking. I believe this is a good sign because more people will be able to experience tangible intimacy with God.
