As the interior spaces in homes have reduced in size, there is need for furniture that fits well, doesn't look too heavy against the interiors of the house and yet, there is no compromise in comfort. In fact there is greater need of comfort now.

Modern furniture is very different. Lighter wood is now used which makes the furniture portable and this is required now as people often need to relocate. There are many other materials also used in furniture apart from wood, like wrought iron, plastic and glass especially for tabletops and so on. Polyester and other man made fabrics are more in use now instead of silk and other such draping fabrics. The focus is to keep it to a minimum.

One more feature that is worth highlighting in modern furniture is multiple use furniture. Again due to limited space, people want to keep minimum furniture in their home and make maximum use of it. There are plenty of drawers provided in beds, side tables etc. to make full use of the space available in them. Further, convertible sofas are an interesting example of the innovation in modern furniture which can save you both space and money. They can be used as a sofa and when needed, can be stretched out to a bed.

The definitions of style have changed too. Simple and elegant furniture is more in demand now, rather than furniture with heavy work. It helps give a light and classy feel to the house. Heavy carvings often look a bit overboard. However, that does not mean that it is dull. In fact, there is far more experimentation in modern furniture than ever before. There is a great variety available, in terms of materials, designs and colors. Every kind of furniture has a personality of its own and you can choose what best suits your taste. The variety in colors is like never before. There are colors ranging from classic white, beige to darker shades like brown, black and even reds and other brighter shades, depending on the piece of furniture of course. The features of modern furniture as all other things are a sign of the changing modern time and age.
