Content Is King in Internet Marketing! But, Beware!
Great Search Engine Opimization (SEO) virtually demands a basic understanding that Content is King in Internet marketing
. It increases search engine ranking which results in more targeted organic (free) traffic for your business, and it provides justification for other sites to link to your business website.
I recently saw this summary on content in the Philadelphia Inquirer by Joseph N. DiStefano (Friday, May 21, 2010 p. D3). According to Patrick Keane, "...newspapers aren't good at the "math & science" of generating traffic. News is ephemeral. But if you create content that's lifetime, you can monetize that." Patrick Keane runs Associated Content, which he recently sold to Yahoo for a reported $100 million. Indeed, content is lifetime!
Content is King to anyone who has a business website and wants to drive targeted traffic to their website. Content can mean text, pictures, videos, PowerPoint presentations, etc. Content is King because it is the key element in advertising, marketing and promoting a any business website today.
The major search engines demand unique original content to enhance their "users experience." And, its not as difficult to develop unique original content as you may think. It's really just a matter of focusing on a particular subject and telling your audience "what you think" and "where they can find more information" on the subject. And, its very appropriate to make you own recommendation based on what you know and think. If you are providing good sound recommendations, other sites will link to yours.
On the other hand, I see far too many blog posts or articles that amount to nothing more than a bunch of words wrapped around an affiliate link that directs someone to a sales page. This is not content. This is sales. You are not going to get search engine love if this is your approach to Internet marketing. Furthermore, it certainly is not unique. If you want to make your content unique, always consider how you can pass value to your readers. That's unique.
Content is not a product sales page. Content is reviewing one to three different products and offering your opinion. Write to your readers needs. If the search engines send someone to your site, they did so because they determined that you could offer them a solution to their problem. Ask you yourself this question: "What do my readers need to know in order to help them make an educated decision on a product?" Provide useful information that gives your readers the impression that you really care about helping them. Don't be afraid to show some personality. Try to relate to your visitor's experience. They will appreciate that there is a real person trying to help them. That is unique! Now, you are getting some search engine love.
Yes, Content is King in Internet marketing and as Patrick Keane says, it is lifetime. However, this can be bad as well as good. If people are not visiting your business website, your lifetime of content will simply rot on the Internet vine. If you are pitching product 100 percent of the time, you certainly are not offering unique original content. Make it valuable. Make it user friendly. Make it objective and informative. The search engines know the type of content you are producing and they have long memories. So, beware of the type of content you are producing! If it's original. If it's unique and offers value, your lifetime of content will reward you immensely.
