Continuing Educational Requirements In Texas For Teachers
Once you obtain your Texas teacher certification
, you are not done with getting your education just yet. It is a good idea for teachers to keep in the know and to work on furthering their education for years to come. The goal of this type of program is to ensure that teachers always have the freshest information available and that they are continuously learning new strategies and methods for teaching students. It goes hand in hand - learning and teaching.
Requirements
In Texas, the state requires that each classroom teacher complete 150 clock hours of continuing education called Continuing Professional Education or CPE. Your initial teachers license is good for five years. During that five year period, you must complete 150 hours of additional coursework study (which can come from a wide selection of methods) in order for you to renew your license at that point.
The state board encourages not only the completion of 150 hours but that they be taken in 30 hour blocks each year, but there is some flexibility in that. Only those programs approved by the Texas Education Agency will qualify for this type of credit hours, though.
Where Does It Come From?
The education you obtain to meet the CPE requirements can come from a wide range of activities. As long as it is approved through the Texas Education Agency it will meet these requirements. The following are some of the options to consider.
- You can participate in seminars, workshops, institutes, in-service and staff developmental programs. These must be related to improving professional knowledge and skills as an educator.
- You can also complete undergraduate courses in the types of certificates you plan to renew. This includes in the content area and skills related fields that you plan to teach. You can take training programs from an accredited educational provider, too. In this case, one semester hour of credit is good for 15 CPE clock hours of study.
- You can work on the development of CPE training materials or curriculum through the approved methods as well.
- You can use independent study as an option, but this cannot be more than 20 percent of the required clock hours you need. It must also be in professional materials relevant to your certification, such as in books, audio tapes, computer software or online information.
- Provide professional guidance as a mentor educator. This cannot exceed more than 30 percent of your required clock hour requirement.
- You can teach or present a CPE activity as well. This may not count for more than 10 percent of the required clock hours.
- You can serve as an assessor, for the principal assessment process.
Continuing education is important to anyone who plans to be a teacher in the state. You will need to be diligent in the areas of education you take on. For many people, it is a necessary requirement for you to get the education you need on a regular basis. It is also important for you to consider advancing your skills so you can provide even more up to date information to the students you teach.
