Control Possum Damage To Your Garden

Possums may be native to Australia, but they can destroy your hard-work in your garden

. Whilst it is impossible to keep possums from your property completely, there are steps you can take to minimise damage. A combination of several of the below tips, rather than any by themselves, will give you the best chance of success.

Spikes and Collars

Pest X spikes can be attached to most outside surfaces, such as trees, fences and beams, restricting possum movement. These can also work to block access for possums to structures that lead to your roof. Collars can also be used on large trees, to stop possums climbing them and accessing other foliage or your roof. These are large metal sheets that are wrapped around the trunk of the tree so that a Possum can't grip the trunk due to the slippery metal.

Chemicals

There is much debate about whether chemical deterrents have any lasting effect on possums taking up residence in your garden. Options such as D-Ter and Scat are popular powders that when diluted become sprays that can be applied to plants directly. Poss Off is another mixture that can possum control. It needs to be sprayed every night however, in order to have an effect. Chemical and household mixtures may work for some people and not for others, but you do need to regularly use them to see any result.

Netting

Netting is a great solution to protect especially loved plants from possums. Use netting in vegetable gardens, with stakes, to protect your crop. Make sure plants are completely covered, in order to ensure protection. The netting should be pulled away each day, so plants can utilize sunlight during that day to grow, and to have access to being watered and pollinate.

Lights and Sounds

Spotlights with motion detectors are a popular choice in rooves and gardens. Possums are deterred by the light and often move quickly on. You can also purchase StrayBan, a computerised device that emits an ultrasonic frequency sound. This sound is impossible or humans to hear, but discourages possums.

Grow Plants That Are Unpalatable to Possums

Rather than investing in measures that deter possums from damaging your plants, consider growing plants that possums do not like to eat. English Ivy is one vine that is toxic to possums, however it can also cause skin irritation to humans. Other options are ceanthus and chaenomoles speciosa; shrubs that are drought tolerant and flower beautifully in spring. Common plants that are also reportedly unpalatable and can aid possum control include hibiscus, hydrangeas and agapanthus.
