Traditional manual or attendant-propelled wheelchairs were bulky and required much arm muscle and upper body strength from its user. On the other hand, when electric mobility wheelchairs came into being, their ergonomic seats and easy controls allowed for more independent movements from the user. Many models brag of joysticks and buttons in the control panel which makes moving possible with just a slight push or click.

The wheels and battery of this modern kind of vehicle also contributes to the conveniences users get to experience. This modern transportation has more agile tyres which provide a full range of motions and can be ridden in rough terrain. But caution and safety should still always be in mind when manoeuvring in difficult pavement situations.

The battery of this vehicle also evolved from the typical wet cell batteries just like those used in cars to the newest kind which are the lithium batteries. The wet cell batteries were easy to re-charge but were prone to leaks and cracks so the introduction of lithium batteries, offered more safety and longer battery life. These were also lighter making the mobile equipment easier to control and ride.

The first wheelchair added comfort to the life of its users but this modern mobile equipment provides more, so that the physically challenged individuals now have a better quality of life even with their physical restrictions.

Modernisation really has its benefits and handicapped persons and seniors certainly have not been left behind.
