Cooking with Bamboo Steamers
Bamboo is a versatile product, and is used for many purposes. The one that comes vividly to my mind is fence building. It is also used for indoor and outdoor water fountains, vertical blinds, coffee tables, window shades, window chimes, steamers, and food. These are just some of the uses of bamboo.
Cooking with bamboo steamers is quite common in Asian countries. Steaming is a very healthy method of cooking, and is more gentle than boiling. The food is not placed in water, thus, the shape, color, flavor and texture of the food is retained. Bamboo steamers absorb excess moisture and prevent condensation from dripping on the food. Steamed foods can retain the B and C vitamins that are lost with other cooking methods, such as braising, baking or boiling.
The bamboo steamer is a container with individual cooking trays or layers. This allows the cook to separate and steam different types of foods at one time. Therefore one burner can be used to produce multiple steamers full of food. Oversized bamboo steamers designed for extra large pots can be used for big trays of food, and smaller ones can be used in kitchens with limited space. Individual meals can also be cooked in bamboo steamers, and can also be used for quick re-heating. The layers have an open-weave bottom that allows steam to pass through to cook the food. Foods are positioned above boiling water, or water that is hot enough to produce steam to cook foods with a moist hot air.
Both fresh and frozen foods can be cooked in bamboo steamers. They are designed to fit snugly against the sides of a wok above steaming water. The food can be placed directly on the slatted base or on a plate or shallow bowl set on the base. If the food is placed directly on the base, a variety of materials, such as lettuce leaves, parchment paper, corn husks, and banana leaves can be used to line the steamer to prevent the food from sticking. Food can also be placed above a pot of boiling water in place of a wok.
Many American housewives and cooks are exploring this versatile, economical, tasty, and healthy method of bamboo steaming. So, you too can join them Go out and buy a good quality bamboo steamer, and enjoy this healthy Asian way of cooking.
