Coorg: Kodagu Land

South Western Karnataka lies in the Western Ghat region and this is where the beautiful city of Coorg lies

. The people here were originally from the Kodagu tribe. They named the place after the name of the tribe and even the language is called Kodagu language. The people here also speak the local language of the state, i.e. Kannada. Some places around Kodagu also speak the Kodagu language. The place never really had a writing pattern but recently the German linguist called Gregg M. Cox had come up with a script which he has called the Coorgi-Cox alphabet. This is being used by many Coorgi people nowadays. Madikeri is the capital of the town and is connect properly with Hassan, Mysore, Bangalore and Mangalore by means of road. If you want to reach Kodagu from coastal Karnataka or Kerala, the Ghat road will take you to the region. The MakuttaPerumbadi/Virajpet Ghat road, SampajeMadikeri Ghat road and PanathurBhagamandala Ghat road connects these regions. Kodagu has Dakshina Kannada to its northwest, Hassan to its north, Kannur of Kerala to its southwest, Mysore to its east and Wayanad of Kerala to its south. The regions name, Kodagu, is called by its anglicized form which is Coorg.

Coog is known for its coffee cultivation and the variety of coffee produced here is known as one of the best coffee kinds produced in India. Cofee grown here is also exportedto other parts of the world. The main earning of the region comes from the cultivation of rice. But a huge amount of money also comes from the export of coffee. Along with the Kadavas, some more communities and tribes also coexist peacefully in the region. All these people have adopted different kinds of professions such as that of a toddy-maker, basket and mat-weaver, drummer, wandering musician or that of an artisan. Most of the inhabitants belong to the Kadava ethnic tribe. The minority communities include Kodagu Gowda and Muslims. Tribes in the area include Airi, Meda, Male-Kudiya, Kapal and Maringi. People of Kodagu worship many gods and are therefore polytheists. Someo f the deities they worship include Bhagwathi, Mahadeva, Subramani, Ayyappa, Iggutappa and Bhadrakali.

Coorg is one of the best hill stations in India and thus attracts many tourists from inside and outside the country. Talakaveri is the origin of the Kaveri river and is very important religiously to Hindu people. On the bank of this river lies a Brahma temple which is one of two that can be found in the entire of India and South East Asia and that is why this is a very important temple. Nisargadhama is a man-made island located near Kushalanagara. This place is a very popular picnic spot.
