Coorg: The Land Of Coffee, Rice And Agriculture

In South western Karnataka in the Western Ghat region lies the beautiful city of Coorg

, the name of which is an anglicized version of Kodagu as it is traditionally known. The region is the least populous district in Karnataka. Kodagu is known for its world class coffee beans which are exported throughout the world. Madikeri is the capital of the district and the region is surrounded by Dakshina Kannada districtto its northwest, Hassan districtto the north,Kannur districtofKeralato the southwest, Mysore districtto the east, and theWayanad districtof Kerala to the south. The native language of this region is Kodava but people belonging to neighbouring districts also speak the Kodava language. The region does not have a script, but recently s German linguist Gregg M. Cox, developed a writing structure for the language which he named the Coorgi-Cox alphabet which is now being used by a number of inhabitants.

Most of the population includes the people belonging to the native ethnic tribe- Kodavas. Other communities include Kodagu Gowda and Muslims and minor tribes in the region are Airi, Meda, Male-Kudiya, Maringi, Kapal, Kembatti, Heggade, Kolla, Kavadi, Kurubas, Koleya, Koyava, Kanya, Kudiyas, Banna, Ganiga, Golla, Thatta, Yeravas, Malaya etc. Main earning of the economy comes from the cultivation of rice but coffee also brings a substantial amount of money. People residing here are polytheists who worship a number of deities such as Bhagwathi, Mahadeva, Bhadrakali, Subramani, Ayyappa and Iggutappa. People here have adopted a variety of occupations that include being artisans, drummers, wandering musicians, basket and mat-weavers and toddy-makers.

Kodagu is considered as one of the best hill stations of India and have many attractive sites that attract many tourists from around the globe. Talakaveri is the place where River Kaveri begins. This place is religiously significant because of the Brahma temple situated on the bank of the river. This temple is one of the two temples dedicated to God Brahma in the entire of India and South-East Asia. Nisargadhama is a man-made island and popular picnic spot formed by the river Kaveri. This place is located near Kushalanagara.

Madikeri is connected properly withMangalore,Hassan,Mysore,Bangalore, Kannur andWayanad by road. You can take the following three Ghat roads to reach Kodagu from coastal Kerala and Karnataka regions- theSampajeMadikeriGhat road, PanathurBhagamandalaGhatroad and MakuttaPerumbadi/VirajpetGhat road. Nearest railway stations are in Thalassery and Kannur in Kerala and Mangalore, Mysore and Hassan in Karnataka. Also, Coorg does not have an airport but the ones situated in MysoreandMangalore are pretty close. The seaport closest to Coorg is New Mangalore Port which is at Panambur in Mangalore.
