Cope with Irregular Periods

Irregular periods are a great challenge for girls and women who do not know when to expect their next menstrual period. What can be done about irregular periods and how can you help your daughter cope with irregular periods?

Preparation

While many girls and women will know the exact date that their next menstrual period is due, those who have irregular periods will not be able to pinpoint the date that their period is expected to begin. This can be worrying for young girls, especially when they are in school or taking part in extra-curricular activities. Parents should make sure that their daughters are prepared for their period by encouraging them to always have a supply of feminine hygiene products with them when they are at school, playing sport or with their friends. Girls should also take along an extra pair of underwear so that they can change it if their period arrives while they are away from home. Advance preparation will help girls to deal with the practical issues that come up when their period begins unexpectedly. It will also help them to avoid the embarrassment of being caught off guard without any pads or tampons when they need them most.

Warning Signs

Warning signs often alert girls and women to the fact that their period is due, either a day before or on the actual day of the menstrual period. Some of these warning signs to look out for include unexplained cramping, bloating, stomach pains and cravings for rich food. Let your daughter know that she should make a mental note of how she feels shortly before her period begins so that she can recall these warning signs and use them to her advantage. Then as she begins to associate the warning signs with her approaching menstrual period, she will be able to cope more successfully with her irregular periods.

If your daughter is experiencing irregular periods, she will probably feel that she has no control over her body. But that is not strictly true. Even if your daughter's menstrual periods never become regular over time, she can still take control of her menstrual cycle. Encourage your daughter to always be prepared in case her period begins unexpectedly by packing feminine hygiene products and extra underwear. Drawing her attention to her body's unique warning signs will also buy some time so that she is prepared for when her period begins unexpectedly.
