Coping With A Failed Hearing Test

For many individuals, having a hearing test is worrisome

. You may know that there is a problem present and you are sure you will not do well with this screening. Though it can seem incredibly difficult to live in a situation where you cannot hear well, there may be some small things you can do to improve your overall well-being. Keep in mind that you may qualify for the use of a device that will make sounds louder to you. Even with this, though, it can be helpful to improve your surroundings so you are less likely to struggle with complications.

Talking to Others

If you did not do well on your hearing test and you are now facing a situation in which you have long-term damage to the inner portion of your ear, you will need to make changes to the way you do things both as a way to prevent further damage and to improve your ability to hear. One of the hardest situations is when you need to talk to other people. To make this easier, turn yourself so that you can hear the individual. This may mean turning your body or head so that your ear is able to pull in the sounds better.

You can also ask people to help you with this situation. For example, you can ask individuals to slow down and speak more clearly to you. Explain what is happening and what you need from them. When sounds are slower and the individual is speaking clearer, you may be able to decipher more of what he or she is saying to you.

Set Up the Room

Whenever you are doing anything, ensure the room you are in is set up to help you to hear at your best level. For example, be sure that you turn off any type of background noise that you do not need. If you are going to speak on the phone, for example, turn off the television in the background. This can improve your ability to pick out sounds more clearly. You may also want to remain in quiet settings. If you are going out to dinner with friends, ask to go to a quiet restaurant or sit in a portion of the restaurant that is quieter to you. This can help improve your ability to hear well.

There are many changes that you may have to make in your daily life when you are struggling with a loss of the ability to hear. The good news is that depending on the outcome of your hearing test, you may qualify for the use of a device that can make sounds louder, which could give you some quality of life back.
