Coping With Loneliness While Single
Although it can be a tremendously liberating experience being single
, loneliness can intrude on your life at any time. When you spend considerable amounts of time on your own, it is only natural to feel the dull pain of loneliness on occasion. However, there is little reason why loneliness should be the dominant aspect of your life even if you currently aren't involved in a relationship. By taking steps to ensure that your mind is kept occupied and your body is in good health, you may be able to enjoy life being single...loneliness free.
For many people who are single, loneliness is often the result of spending long periods in isolation and solitude. You don't have to be a monk to feel a sense of isolation either, as the increasingly cold and impersonal world we find ourselves living in results in scores of people feeling lonely even in the midst of bustling activity. For many single people, loneliness is a direct result of being deprived of other people's company. The obvious solution would then be to seek out company. By keeping in touch with your friends and family periodically, you may find yourself able to avoid feelings of loneliness entirely.
One of the best ways to forget your own problems is by helping other people out with their own. No matter how low you may be feeling, there are other people in the world that are much worse off than you are, and you could use your time and effort to lend a hand instead of wallowing in your own misery. If there is a volunteer kitchen in your town or some other worthwhile activity, you may find that pitching in to help will give you a measure of relief from loneliness that wouldn't be possible via any other means.
In the worse cases, loneliness can develop to such an extreme that it begins to affect day-to-day life. People in the grip of loneliness are particularly prone to depression, and the two conditions may even feed off each other. This may result in an endless cycle of depression and loneliness that can have a severely detrimental effect on your life. If your feelings of loneliness stem from abandonment, abuse, or a death of a family member, you may need more help than can be provided by your friends and family. In such a situation, it may be advisable to seek professional counseling. With all the challenges involved in being single, loneliness is the last thing you need to deal with on your own.
All that being said, it is entirely possible to live a happy and fulfilling life even if you choose to remain single. Loneliness is often borne out of frustration at not having any choice with regard to how you live your life. While you still have the opportunity to do so, take full advantage of being single, and loneliness is something you won't have to worry about. When you begin to learn the joys of being single, loneliness will have much less chance of taking over your life.
