Coping With The Baby Blues

Coping With The Baby Blues

Coping With The Baby Blues

For most mothers, having a child is one of the most joyous experiences in their life. However, for some women it can be an extremely difficult time, full of stress and anxiety. The condition, known medically as post natal depression, affects up to ten percent of all mothers, and can be a very traumatic thing to go through.

Many women can feel depressed after giving birth but, more than this, many also suffer with the symptoms during pregnancy. After childbirth, it is common for bouts of tearfulness to be experienced, along with many feelings such as irritability and anxiety. For most, these baby blues do not continue past three or four days, and is perfectly normal as hormonal levels change.

Unfortunately, a number of people fail to lose these feelings quickly. Further still, in many instances the symptoms will not develop until many weeks after childbirth. Such a varied condition, it can be hard to treat, though contacting a doctor should the symptoms continue for more than two weeks is always advisable.

Those suffering with post natal depression will most likely be in a low mood, feel quite apathetic about all things and generally not be interested in conversation. However, there are other symptoms which can occur. Bouts of tearfulness will be very common, or certainly the sudden overwhelming urge to cry. Having a poor appetite will also be a sign to look out for.

It is also likely that sufferers will feel guilty or inadequate in some way, whilst not enjoying anything will particularly extend to their baby. As things get worse, some people may also experience severe thoughts with regards to harming themselves or their baby. Should this be the case, medical assistance needs to be sought immediately.

Though any mother can suffer, it is more likely to be experienced by those who have a history of depression. There are also other risk groups, including single mothers or those who are not being adequately supported by their partner, those who have given birth prematurely, and people who have gone through, or are going through, a traumatic time caused by bereavement, unemployment and the like.

As well as seeking the help of a doctor, mothers who are suffering can also seek help elsewhere. Often, the best place to go is to friends and family of course. However, those who have joined postnatal classes, baby yoga classes and mother and baby groups have also reported back positively.
