Copyrighting Your Caricatures

, every piece of your work is original and unique. You need to copyright your work in order to avoid it being duplicated and unnecessarily used. The minute you touch your pen to paper in hope of creating a drawing, copyright exists on that work. As the caricaturist for the drawing, you fully own its copyrights. Along with ownership of your works copyrights, you also control other things like reproduction, distribution, displaying and making copies of your work. Sometimes you may come across a client, a contractor or any other third party who violated any one of these rights that you have on your work. There are a few things you have to do in order to prevent such cases of infringement in the future.

The first thing to figure out is whether or not it is you who owns the copyright of your work. Independent caricaturists are often the sole owner of their copyrights. On the other hand, if caricaturists for hire are employed under a third person, their employer owns the copyrights of the work of the caricaturist. It is important to remember that ownership of a copyright is not the same as owning the material object on which the work that is copyrighted is embodied. This means that even if you are paid to make a drawing, you still own it. No one can make copies of it without your permission.

It is a good idea to have a copyright on every piece of work that you produce. Marking a copyright on a caricature means mentioning its year of publication and the artists name. Publication takes place when your work begins to be officially distributed. Selling the original piece of work does not fall under publication. A copyright notice on your works is not compulsory, yet very helpful and is a good idea to include one. This notice informs the public that your work is copyrighted and that no action against the copyright laws can be taken on your work.

Another good idea would be to register your copyright notice. Although this is also no compulsory, it has its advantages. If in case infringement occurs, having registered your copyright will benefit by getting your legal work done quickly and accurately.
