The cordless phone allows the freedom to walk around the house whilst having
a conversation rather than being restricted by the cord.
The system has a base station which is connected to a main telephone line. This base station needs to be plugged into the mains electricity. The handset has a rechargeable battery which charges when it is placed back onto the base. The range at which the phone is able to function properly is usually somewhere within or close to the same building as the base.
As well as the base station the system can then have several more handsets which all connect via radio frequency.
There are two types of cordless phone; there are analogue and digital systems. The digital systems are usually more expensive but usually provide a better service with less interference and often a further range. Digital systems work by decoding bytes of information. Analogue systems work by varying frequency to control what we hear. The drawbacks of analogue systems are that the frequency can be easily picked up by other devices which means that they could pose security issues. If someone wanted to listen into a conversation it would be possible. It also means that other electronic devices can interfere with the frequency causing the line to be interrupted and not perform so well.
Choosing the right type of cordless phone for you will involve making a decision on a number of factors. Firstly what is your budget? There is a wide price range for cordless phones each with different pros and cons. More expensive models may have better security and more high tech features such as Bluetooth and intercom systems.
