Today's sedentary way of life has caused many problems to more than 30% of Americans. This is the obesity percentage caused mainly by lack of physical activity and improper diet. Sitting at the desk at work or at the couch watching countless hours of TV shows have taken it's toll. We are unable to move the way we used to when we were kids. Even the thought of getting up and walking to the grocery store is imaginable to us and very easily we resort to the car or public transportation for anything we do.
But being unable to move or walk like before is not the only bad thing. Being overweight has many negative health effects also. Heart diseases which are caused by being overweight are one of the most common causes of death, we age faster and being overweight not only has esthetic but also mental and emotional effects on health.
So what are we doing wrong? It took us years to get where we are now and we don't know what will get us out. Please, whatever you do, don't go for extreme low fat, low calorie diet that will only do you more harm. You will see some immediate results of course. Your motivation will rise and you will start feeling better about yourself. But very soon your body will just give up and you will start eating as before and very soon gain all the weight you lost and then some more.
The main problem why we are reluctant to move more is because every move has become a problem. We get tired really fast, our back hurts and every day moves like walking, sitting or bending have become unnatural looking. Our body structure has weakened due to years of inactivity. While we were kids we were moving, jumping, rolling, crawling and bending all the time. As we grew up we simply stop all this and our muscles deteriorated. Muscles that support our body structure, also known as core muscles, are the first ones that will get affected. Core muscles are where every powerful body movement originates and they are thought to be your center of power.
The Core Muscles
Many people refer to abdominals as core muscles but there is a lot more to it. These are the major core muscle groups:
Rectus abdominis - the most recognized core muscles also known as "six pack"
External oblique - muscles located on each side and in front of the rectus abdominis
Internal oblique - located just below the external oblique
Transverse abdominis - muscle that wraps around your torso with primary role of supporting the spine and stabilizing the body
Erector spinae - these are the back muscles with tendons that start near the sacrum and extend throughout the back
Hip flexors - muscles that are used when bringing the thighs up towards the abdomen
Gluteus - group of three muscles that make up the buttocks, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus
Harmstring - muscles located on the backside of the thighs
Hip adductors - muscles located on the inner side of the thighs, their primary job is to bring the legs together
There you go, all of this muscles have their role on core stability. Try to remember when did you do something positive for any of those muscles. Core muscles strength is essential for transferring the energy throughout the body during many activities. It is of no surprise that it is hard to imagine going to a gym or even increase physical activity through tasks as simple as walking, gardening or house cleaning because our core is weak and we feel fatigue and weakness as soon as we start doing anything.
If you have really decided to improve your life, lose weight, improve your health and looks you must not neglect this facts. Core muscles have significant importance for overall body stability, fitness and shape and through simple exercises to strengthen the core you can improve your quality of life. In addition to increasing physical activity through walking and exercising you must also change your dietary habits to see the real results. Maybe it does not mean you have to eat less and less frequently. In fact it is desirable to eat 4-5 times per day but less amounts. Avoiding fast food restaurant, processed foods, sugars and certain types of carbohydrates can create miracles for your body.
