Being a man-made solid surface that is thermoplastic during production and water repellent when cooled, Corian worktops have been popular in commercial premises for years. Practically every motorway service station in the UK has Corian sinks and washing area surfaces - and if they can stand up to this level of use then they are more than capable of coping with the average domestic kitchen. Since fitted kitchens began, plastic laminated worktops have become very popular and were by far the most common work surface in the British kitchen. In recent years, there has been a huge swing towards solid surfaces such as granite, wood and man-made mixes of minerals and polymers. Unfortunately, however beautiful natural surfaces like granite and wood are, their use within kitchens is limited by their very nature. Obviously wood is not water resistant and needs to be treated regularly to keep it resistant. Granite, on the other hand, is water resistant, especially when polished so once it is installed it does not need to be maintained. However, because of its natural origins it the minute holes occurring in it are not evenly distributed and can result in it fracturing due to stress and can chip easily. Corian has been specifically designed not to have these shortcomings and if you should chip it the surface can be repaired in such a way that no one would ever guess. Additionally, because it is thermoplastic and can be shaped during the manufacturing process, the kitchen sink can be seamlessly joined to the work surface, thereby reducing any joints that attract breeding bacteria and making your kitchen a healthier place to cook.
