Corsair Flash Voyager Gt Review
Corsair have talked up the potential of its Flash Voyager range of USB drives quite bit recently
. Corsair have a history of making high performance memory, which certainly helps their marketing types, and they have covered the Voyager range of drives in an durable rubber casing, a nice feature for those who are clumsy with thier drives. Voyager USB drives have supposedly survived boiling, microwaving, freezing and various other nasties and the data has survived.
The GT moniker means this is the performance edition of the Voyager drive. The look and feel of the drive has not changed since the original Voyager, although the GT has a black and red rubber casing as opposed to blue and black.
The Voyager range is certainly durable and good quality, it's not the smallest or the most convenient drive about, however if you are in the market for a rugged drive then it's unlikely to be your primary concern.
Corsair provide a lanyard in the package, and a short USB extension cable. It's all fairly standard stuff, but it is good to see it included and both items are good quality and useful. The drive also comes with TrueCrypt loaded for keeping your data private.
Perhaps on of the most important things, and often not mentioned or considered is the warranty. The Cosair Voyager GT comes with a 10 year warranty, so if performance of your flash drive begins to degrade or it fails completely you will have some come-back. It is definitely an important consideration, and demonstrates Corsairs trust in its hardware.
Using HD Tach, a benchmarking tool for flash memory we found that the Voyager GT has very low random access times, 1.1ms, while other drives trailed with 1.5ms - 2.5ms.
Read speed tests when using large files of 700MB showed good performance, averaging 29.9MB/s, the results were much the same when testing large file writes of 700MB, the Corsair achieving a sustained 21.2MB/s which is well above the average, even for so called 'fast' drives on the market.
In use we found the Corsair Voyager GT to to be a very relaible drive, not so small that you lose it, especially if you use the lanyard, and the rubber coating makes it easier to plug in the drive when space is tight.
Although not the outright quickest drive ont he market, the Voyager GT puts in goodspeeds, and its large file read and write speeds are particualyl good. If you absolutely must have the quickest drive the are aother alternaitves, but with the Voyager GT you are getting the extra durability and that nice long warranty. All in, highly recommended!
