Cosmetic Surgery: What To Expect During Recovery

The process of healing is common to all types of surgery and involves the bodys complex response to an operation

. It is important to note that each individual patients restorative process will vary post-surgery. Healing times after surgery vary depending on the nature, extent, and invasiveness of the procedure. The recovery process generally begins with minimal bruising, swelling and clotting at the site of the surgery and ends with the final plastic surgical scar and improved appearance.

Immediately after a surgical cosmetic procedure, it is recommended that the patient has someone with them for the 24 hours following surgery. The first 24 hours after surgery are crucial in that the body is still dealing with the effects of the surgery and anesthesia. As time progresses, the initial injury to the body subsides, swelling and bruising reduces, bandages become less cumbersome and the patient is on the road to recovery. Proper nutrition and rest improve the rate of recovery.

Recovery in certain surgeries, such as rhinoplasty and liposuction, varies greatly depending on the patient. Some procedures require no work at all (with the exception of using nasal sprays for rhinoplasty), and others require significant attention to dressing changes and compressive garments like liposuction and breast augmentation. Specific instructions are given to all patients, and the amount of time off from work or reduction in activities should be discussed by the patient and doctor before undergoing any procedure.

In the case of liposuction, patients will usually find that they can move around without too much trouble or pain. It is crucial that patients do not take this as assurance that it is okay to resume normal functioning as the body will not finished healing for weeks to months, and microscopically for years. Excessive motion without ample time for recuperation puts the body at risk for bleeding complications. This in no way suggests that movement adversely affects the healing process. A little mobility during this period helps with healing and increases circulation. Improved circulation lessens the risk of blood clots. Movement also helps patients who have had liposuction done by assisting the drainage of the anesthetic from the site where the fat was vacuumed out.

For a patient who has undergone a facelift or a rhinoplasty, some minor bruising and swelling is to be expected. In all cases patients should expect mild to moderate soreness and some amount of discomfort for which their doctors will prescribe painkillers. The medication and dosage will be dependent on the extent of the surgery and the patients level of tolerance. In some cases, patients may only require milder over the counter pain medications. In addition to pain medicine, doctors may prescribe cold compresses to help with the discomfort after surgery. If the pain from any type of cosmetic surgery ever becomes severe during the recovery period, the patient should alert their doctor as soon as possible.

Regardless of whether complications emerge or not, patients will make follow-up visits to their surgeon within days after the procedure. Close follow-up is very important even if it only involves some reassurance or asking and getting answers to simple questions These visits may also involve having stitches and/or drainage devices removed, assessing skin quality, changing dressings and primarily assessing the patients healing and recovery.
