It was also during this point that surgeons fully realized the influence one's appearance has on his subsequent lifestyle after the war, and his odds for success in life. In the United States, the discipline of plastic surgery was jumpstarted with the founding of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPRS). Prior to its creation in 1931, no organization ever existed for American plastic surgeons. The society's collective work gave rise to many notable developments in the field, of including the recognition of the progress and history of plastic surgery by the American Board of Surgeons. ASPRS members also created the first qualifying exam for plastic surgery in the US. In succeeding years, a number of similar organizations sprang up due to ASPRS's efforts to promote plastic surgery as a discipline and industry in its own right. The 1960s and 70s set the stage for the more well-known history of plastic surgery. During these decades, a number of plastic surgeons contributed and showed many innovations in the area, including giving birth to a Surgeon General, and a Nobel Prize winner. But it was a lot later, during the 1990s when real advancements happened.
