Cough is an involuntary reflex .coughing is also called as tussis
. This can be categorized as acute (less than 3 weeks) or chronic (greater than 3 weeks). In addition, some people cough more often than others because individuals vary/ deviate in the amount of irritation they can tolerate. Coughing being mostly involuntary can also be voluntary
Coughing is initiated by the nerves in the lungs to the brain. A cough is a sudden and often repetitively occurring reflex which helps to clear the large breathing passages from secretions, irritants, foreign particles and microbes. Normal coughing is important to keep your throat and airways clear by getting rid of mucus or other irritating particles.
CAUSES
A number of illnesses can be cause of cough such as Inflammation of larynx or pharynx, Smoking, Exposure to allergens, like dust, smoke, pollen grains and chemical fumes, Weather changes, Common cold, Hay fever, Bronchitis, Influenza, Medications, Respiratory syncytial virus, Respiratory tract infection.
The main symptom is involuntary coughing: -
Runny nose or nasal congestion,
Headache, fever, body aches,
Difficulty in swallowing, throat ache,
Pain in the ribs etc.
