Could Not Having Fleet Gps Tracking Cost Your Company $1,000,000?
In GPS fleet tracking we hear a lot of stories about how GPS tracking has increased
productivity and reduced fuel consumption; however, many companies are still unconvinced about the benefits of a fleet tracking system.
One such company is a leading bottling company in the U.S. During a recent demonstration of our Fleet Tracking System, the owners and fleet managers decided to put GPS tracking to the test on 100 of their delivery trucks.
Similar to many other organizations, this bottling company really had a lot of appreciation for their delivery drivers. In fact they had many long term employees who had been with them for many years. One in particular (let's just say his name was Tom) had been working them for some 30+ years. You may wonder why a company would even bother keeping tabs on such a loyal employee. Well, just like many other businesses, this bottling company had struggled to keep up with increased fuel costs and was struggling to profit in a difficult economy.
In today's economy, business owners have to be extra cautious of every dollar spent. Not just on fuel but on any other ways they can cut costs. Businesses would much rather find ways to cut costs than to resort to layoffs. And so, our GPS tracking system made it's way onto the truck of a 30 year veteran driver who knew full well that it was being installed.
After only a few short weeks of using the new GPS system, our test company noticed some very peculiar things happening. Some of their drivers were not staying on their correct courses even though they knew the GPS system was installed on the truck. Tom was one of these drivers. Each morning before starting his delivery route he would drive for 30 miles completely off course. After a brief stop, he'd head back and then start his correct route. The bottling company thought that this was awfuly odd and they assumed that something must be wrong with the GPS itself.
A few days went by and the company couldn't help but notice that Tom's truck was still showing this same 30 mile route each morning that was not part of his normal route. So they decided to confront Tom about it. They said: "Tom, do you have any idea why your truck's GPS shows and extra 60 miles logged each morning before you start your normal shift"? Tom said: "Oh I can explain that. My buddies and I like to grab some coffee and doughnuts in the morning before we start work, and I've been doing it every since I've worked here so I hope that's ok".
When management realized what Tom had been doing for the past 30 years, they got curious and decided to add up some numbers. 30 miles twice per day is 60 miles. Times 5 days per week is 300 miles. Times 52 weeks in a year is 15,600. Times 30 years is 468,000 miles! Then when you figure in the cost of gas and Tom's hourly wage, they realized to their absolute horror that good old Tom had cost the company nearly a million dollars! Gee Tom....we sure hope that was a tasty breakfast that you've treated yourself to all these years.
