Could you actually be lucky if you are laid off !
It's no secret that what we have been experiencing since 2008 in our respective economies is the worst global recession since the Great Depression. We've heard this on the television, radio and other media and not just that have one way or another have been personally affected by it. Some have unfortunately had it harder than others, losing not only their jobs but also their homes. Physical, tangible aspect is one thing but what has greatly been affected has been the loss of sense of security, sense of peace and sense of confidence.
Those who have jobs are worried they will soon not have them, those who actually have lost theirs can't seem to find another suitable one despite months of trying. Every day I intuitively coach people who have been out of work for over year and longer. The truth is some of the old jobs in the economy may not even be ever coming back, perhaps even when the economy improves.
Even though the US Government says that the recession was technically over last year in 2009 but here we are inching closer towards 2011, who is seeing the improvements ? Lay offs are still on, companies are either not hiring or are very selective.
So if you are somebody who has been less than lucky in finding yourself a job, it's easy to get discouraged and feel hopeless and bleak about things, like this is the end of the world, your world and things will never turn around. That's one way to look at things and naturally how most people would feel but I encourage you to actually consider that being laid off may actually have benefits.
Benefits:
Many times we we hold onto jobs for security reasons, because of money primarily - Whose going to pay the bills. The job satisfaction levels for most people are very low and for many not even existent. But we hold on, even when we don't want to, we stay chained because of our fears, insecurities and lack of courage to step forward. So we choose complacency and security.
Being laid off pushes you to get unchained and free yourself up. It gives you the space to explore your options, things you may have only considered before but obviously never attempted. It also gives you the time to think creatively, to look at brand new choices for the very first time. Maybe you decide to go back to school and get that training you've always wanted, Or how about changing your field of work or maybe looking into working for yourself.
That's right, this is really your chance to pay attention, soul search and really look at what you want to do , not just for your next job but for the next 20-30 years. Looking for just another job maybe looking at things with a narrow vision.
Being laid off is also an opportunity to search for your life's work. If you really didn't enjoy your previous job, why go back to it. Each person is talented at something, has been given a purpose, has been given natural abilities to be good at something. Have you explored yours ? Ask yourself important questions about what is it that you're good at? Research. If you get stuck , look for a professional to help you find your answers
Being discouraged will definitely not yield results but being creative and utilizing this opportunity definitely will. Remember your answers are right there, waiting for you to discovered. So open your mind, don't be afraid to risks and step into the future with confidence. A new journey awaits you !
