Countdown begins for Rahul Gandhi as Congress working president

NEW DELHI: Stage seems to be set for Rahul Gandhi to take over as the Congress working president while his mother Ms Sonia Gandhi will continue to be the party president. The reshuffle in the All India Congress Committee is imminent in a few days from now after the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh completed the much awaited and so far the biggest reshuffle of the UPA-II.

While Ms Gandhi will continue to remain as the Congress president, the focus of activity is likely to shift around Rahul Gandhi. She will however continue to act as the mentor to her son, besides being the president of the party as all the decisions, although scripted by Rahul, will be executed by her only in her capacity as the party president.

The political grapevine in the national capital is rife with the speculations about Rahuls new role in the party particularly after he declined to take a ministerial responsibility despite the Prime Minister having been very keen about it. So much so he even said that he felt disappointed over Rahul not joining the cabinet.

Rahul is believed to have preferred the bigger role in the party to any ministerial assignment in the government. Since he already happens to be the general secretary the next big role can only be that of the president. However, with Ms Gandhi still being in command, he is most likely to be elevated as the working president of the Congress. The all powerful Congress Working Committee (CWC) which meets later this week is likely to take the final decision about his elevation.

The Congress general secretary has himself dropped enough hints, rather has been forthright in conveying, that he was more keen on strengthening the party than joining the government. He has already embarked upon the countrywide tour, meeting the party workers at the grassroot level to find out the strengths and weaknesses in the party. He has travelled to quite a few states so far and is to complete the tour in a couple of months.

With Rahuls elevation as the working president the centre of activity is likely to shift around him which is currently taking place around his mother Ms Sonia Gandhi. Rahul is believed to be setting up his own war room in anticipation of the 2014 General Elections. It may not come as a surprise that if some powerful and influential people under the current dispensation in the party will be replaced by the new people and there are already enough indications towards that.

Inclusion and exclusion of people in the Rahuls team will depend a lot on the feedback he has been currently getting from across the country form the grassroots level workers who are believed to have complained also against some powerful people holding key positions when it comes to taking important decisions like the distribution of the party tickets.
