Countertops Are The Focal Point Of The Kitchen

From a design standpoint, the kitchen countertops are the focal point of the room

. Everything else, from the cabinets and flooring to the appliances and paint colors, are selected to coordinate with the countertops in a way that creates a complete design scheme. In some designs, ceramic tile might be the material of choice, since this would add texture to the kitchen. Another design might call for granite tops, in order to create a uniform finish. In smaller kitchens, granite is often the designer's material of choice, since the smooth finish gives the appearance of larger counter areas.

As for redesigning or remodeling a kitchen, replacing the countertops can often prove to be the solution to upgrading, without the need for replacing the cabinets and flooring. Choosing the right materials is the key, and the vast selections of tile, marble and granite countertops at affordable prices make this approach an attractive option. What's more, this affordability has lead to several new design concepts that make countertop replacement even more attractive.

For example, the typical 6-inch backsplash is being phased out in favor of a full-height splash, which eliminates that particular edge that only served to collect dust. Many ceramic tile replacements are going away from the traditional 4-inch and 6-inch tiles in favor of 10-inch and 12-inch squares. The larger tiles create an entirely new appearance, and some installers have even abandoned the grout joints in favor of a butt joint.

In most instances, removing and replacing the countertops is not an extensive project. Depending on the materials and the amount of counter space, the project can usually be accomplished in a matter of days. Of course, the main consideration would be protecting the existing cabinets and flooring while the work is being done. Many contractors will use sheets of masonite to guard the flooring, and a heavy rosin paper to protect the base cabinets. However, the resourceful homeowner can always come up with another type of protection that will work equally as well. This is especially true when the carpets are being removed and replaced in other rooms within the house.

Protecting the existing finishes and removing the old countertops are things that can be done without much difficulty. However, when granite is selected as the material for the new kitchen countertops, the installation should be designated to an experienced contractor. Granite is difficult to size and fit properly, and it requires manpower to manipulate the heavy pieces from the cutting area to the counter area. In addition, a contractor will assist with selecting and delivering the slab material for installation. Enlisting the services of a reliable contractor will prove beneficial in many ways.
