When we talk of courgettes, the first thing that comes to mind is a green colored fruit which is part of the Ratatouille dish. There are actually a lot of varieties of courgettes. This article will discuss how courgettes are classified and its different varieties.

Courgette is a fruit which belongs to the Cucurbita family. It comes by different names all over the world. It is called Zucchini in the UK and Zucchino in Italy. Whatever name it goes by, this plant can be classified in two ways. It can either be classified by the color of the fruit or the shape of the plant.

When looking at the fruit of a courgette, you can classify it by its color. There are 4 color classifications. The most common color is green. Other fruit colors are light green, dark green and dark green with light patches.

The second method of classifying courgettes is by looking at the shape of the plant. There are two general shapes of this plant. It can either be closed or open. The difference between the two lies in the leaves.

Open shaped courgettes are characterized by dense leaves. The leaves also look loose. There are many seed varieties for open shaped courgettes. These include Black Zucchini, Gold and Caserta.

On the other hand, close shaped courgettes are characterized by their denser leaves. Due to the denser leaves, the appearance of the plant looks tight. The varieties include Mexican Globe and Black Eagle.

As you can see now, there are many varieties of courgettes. If you are planning to plant courgette in your garden, it might be a daunting task to choose the right variety. To make your selection easier, choose a variety which suits the weather condition of your area.
