Courier Company Packing Guidelines

When you're sending something with a courier company

, you can't just throw everything in a package and expect the courier to pick up the order. Your San Francisco courier service will actually likely have very specific guidelines which they need you to follow when preparing each of your packages. There will be a comprehensive list of guidelines that you need to follow regarding how the items are packaged, what kinds of materials are used to package them, and the kind of documentation that you prepare to accompany the shipment.

When it comes to how items need to be packaged, usually these guidelines address things like making sure that breakables don't get damaged in transit. The rules will include making sure that all breakables are securely packed with no empty air inside the package. Usually this will mean stuffing the package with packing foam, bubble wrap, newspaper, or something similar. Also, anything which is breakable usually must be labeled as such.

The materials that you are going to use to pack the shipments are almost always going to be addressed in the guidelines as well. For instance, they usually indicate that you should only use proper packing tape when packaging this type of shipment. Other types of tape fall off too easily, especially when wet. The guidelines will also discuss about how only appropriate boxes should be used. This means that they need to be heavy enough to secure the package, so the box doesn't tear when the box is being moved. Heavier items need to be double boxed, and those which are even heavier than that may need to be crated.

The final concern is going to be that of the labeling. Labeling is often a very important part of packing guidelines because of how many mistakes occur at courier companies as a result of things being labeled incorrectly. Usually, these guidelines will specify that the package should not have any previous label information visible anywhere on it. It will usually also state if you have to use the custom shipping labels which are provided by the company. This is often required when the company uses a bar code tracking system to log all package movement within their company.

Following these rules is important. If a courier driver feels like any of the guidelines have not been followed properly, they have the right to refuse to pick up a shipment.
