Cover the Extremities to Increase your Home Efficiency
Cover the Extremities to Increase your Home Efficiency
The basic principle of insulation is to block the transfer of heat from a warmer to a cooler area. The transfer of heat takes place via three modes viz. conduction, convection and radiation. Home insulation helps in restricting the transfer of heat by the conduction mode.
The most important aspect of any home insulation program is to cover the extremities. These are the regions that come into direct contact with the outside weather. They pass on the effect further down to the other areas in the house.
So, if the insulation in these primary areas is not proper then even the best insulation inside would not do any good. The insulation procedure includes covering all the extremities by installing replacement windows and attic insulation in other areas.
Windows Replacement are one of the most economical installations. They are convenient to install and makes your home energy efficient. Most but not all the features of the old windows are replaced. The New windows do retain the frame of the previous ones. Vinyl windows are one of the most extensively used replacement windows today.
Vinyl replacement windows have a double pane instead of the single-pane the way it was in the traditional ones. The space between the two panes generally has a vacuum. Therefore, there is no medium of transfer present between the two. As a result, any temperature, whether hot or cold that the outer pane is exposed to, is not experienced by the inner pane. Hence, the conditioned temperature inside the house is not disturbed.
In the latest version of replacement windows, the vacuum is replaced by an inert gas between the two panes of the window. Inert gases being non-conducting provides for a higher degree of weather protection than the former.
Another extremity that needs to be insulated properly in order to bring about optimum results is the attic. The easiest and the most effective mode of insulating the attic, is provided by a radiant barrier. Radiant barriers have a reflective surface and exhibit low emissivity. As a result, they reflect the incident light. This way, these barriers restrict as much as 75% of the total amount of heat from reaching the insides.
The two types of radiant barriers available include foil and spray radiant barrier. As their names go, foil radiant barriers come in the form of a roll that has a reflective surface. This can be installed just like batt insulation.
Spray radiant barrier, however, is only required to be sprayed on the outer face of the attic. This insulation type is easier to install than the former. However, it requires a professional to get the spray radiant barrier integrated in the attic.
